I don’t know how long it has been since you visited Downtown but you’re in for a pleasant surprise. Menominee’s Historical Waterfront Downtown is going through a wonderful metamorphosis. In 2005 the Hyett/Palma team examined our Downtown as a “Cool City” in the great state of Michigan. They developed a plan to thrust our community-conscientious supporters in a new direction; one that would reflect the tide of “small-town” America and the renaissance of our beloved Downtown. The ground-work was done by our forefathers beginning in the late 1800’s. They painstakingly built magnificent buildings with architectural styles that are boasted by many in today’s world. One common thread found throughout most of the historical buildings is the tin ceilings. They are unique in pattern and color and attract a curious following. The walls of these older buildings hold many interesting stories of the journey downtown has made over a hundred plus years.

A natural fact is the location of a lazy marina along the shores of Green Bay and in the heart of Downtown; home to many sailboats, motor boats, kayaks and canoes in warmer months. There is also a public park with sandy beaches and well-kept, landscaped greens to frolic. Tenth Avenue, the welcome mat to Downtown, was recently renovated to include single lanes for an unhurried drive, ample parallel parking spaces, lamp posts whose style is keeping with the historical buildings they illuminate, new sidewalks and mediums to make walking a tempting mode of transportation. Rounding out these changes are newly planted trees and green space to compliment the natural beauty in Downtown.

Professionals of every kind have made their business-home in Downtown. Personal services are offered on every block. “One of a kind” eateries sprinkled all along Tenth Avenue and First Street cater to every taste palette. Shopping in stores with distinct merchandise attract every kind of person from the casual shopper to the mission-oriented shopper. The public library, a historical landmark, welcomes everyone in a magnificent way. Imagine reading your favorite magazine while looking up at a view over water that makes you glad to be alive and in Menominee. There’s family fun downtown as a bowling alley invites you play a game or two.

The waterway is becoming an even more accessible route into our fair city. Your boat trip will include an up-close view of Menominee’s North Pier Light dressed in red and awaiting your inspection. Great fishing can be had on Menominee's Municiple Pier which leads to the light and provides fishing opportunities on the river or bay sides of the pier.

In your exploration of the Downtown, don’t miss a chance to inspect the “Opera House”. Many local supporters and those beyond are excited about the revival of a gem in the making. Reconstruction is scheduled for this year.

To facilitate your exploration of Menominee is the Yellow Bike - Free Ride - Program. Bike racks with yellow painted bikes are placed throughout the City at Henes Park, Spies Field, M&M Plaza Mall, Twin County Airport and by the marina in Downtown Menominee. When you see a "yellow" bike, simply read the guidelines on the rack and start pedaling. Any retailer would be happy to give you directions to scenic spots or guide you to the source of your needs. The bikes will be available from Memorial Day weekend until October 15th. of each year. Enjoy the ride and the views!

Welcome to our town. We’ll leave the light on for you.
